As a Safety Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with company, federal, and state safety regulations. You will be dedicated to efficiently addressing drivers' needs within a proactive safety framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive training sessions offered by the Safety Department, including hands-on simulator training.
- Perform a range of safety functions, such as accident reviews, annual safety evaluations, and remedial training.
- Administer drug tests and breath alcohol tests (BAT).
- Utilize AS-400 systems, Microsoft Office, Computer Based Training (CBT) systems, and L3 simulators effectively.
- Provide 24-hour on-call support as required by the Terminal Manager.
- Counsel drivers on DOT violations and company policy breaches.
- Conduct road tests and evaluations to assess driver safety and compliance with regulations.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in performing pre-trip inspections.
- Execute additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications
- Exceptional understanding of policies, procedures, and new driver orientation methodologies.
- Thorough knowledge of federal regulations and company policies.
- Understanding of federal and state traffic laws related to tractor/trailer operations.
- Proficient in operating a semi-truck and trailer.
- Outstanding listening and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent presentation skills in educational settings.
- Strong customer service skills and a team-oriented mindset.
- Capability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
- Courteous and professional communication skills.
- Competent in using computers and office equipment.
- Flexible with work hours and self-motivated with attention to detail.
- Skilled in acclimating and orienting drivers to their new roles.
- Minimal travel may be required.
- Able to provide in-cab counseling effectively.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- College education preferred.
- Experience in public speaking or adult education is advantageous.
- Background in transportation safety and possession of a Class A CDL preferred.
- 1 to 2 years of experience in a Safety Specialist or similar role is preferred.
