Overview
School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States. Health and Safety – Senior Health & Safety Specialist / Facilities and Infrastructure Safety Manager. Hybrid position, requiring 3-4 days onsite.
The mission of the Office of Facilities Planning and Management (OFPM) is to plan for and manage the facilities needs of the School of Medicine community in facilities operations, capital planning and budgeting, projects from programming through occupancy, space inventory, and facility assets. The Safety & Emergency Management office seeks a knowledgeable senior safety professional to manage environmental, health and safety (EHS) programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive program excellence and continuous improvement. Success is measured by integrating program goals into standard work practices aligned with business goals and values.
Responsibilities
- Build/maintain a comprehensive Facilities Infrastructure Safety & Compliance Program to ensure School of Medicine facilities comply with government regulations.
- Serve as the primary safety and code compliance contact for the Planning, Project Management, and Facilities Operations teams; conduct plan reviews to ensure designs comply with Federal, State, and Local regulations.
- Work with Facilities Operations to complete safety reviews of designated planned maintenance projects.
- Collaborate with design teams to ensure safety and environmental compliance in renovations/build projects; apply best practices, university guidelines, and regulations for securing equipment, hazardous materials storage/use, environmental processes, machine guarding, signage, etc.; apply advanced safety knowledge to incorporate new technologies and methodologies in lab research.
- Serve as the technical expert on building code and fire code; act as liaison with Authorities Having Jurisdiction as required.
- Partner with university and regulatory subject matter experts on building facility safety, laboratory design issues, inspections, and align with local policies and best practices.
- Work with teams to understand local and regional long-term compliance practices and implement new program developments.
- Apply advanced knowledge to respond to regulation changes and meet regulatory timelines.
- Perform internal audits to monitor program effectiveness and external government inspections, compliance follow-up, and reporting.
- Deliver accurate documentation and provide clear weekly communications with clients, team members, regulators and stakeholders; create presentations, complex reports, spreadsheets, webinars, and webpage content; develop tools using complex databases to align internal inspection procedures with regulatory codes.
- Collaborate with Facilities Operations, laboratory operations staff, and departmental management to resolve safety and environmental issues; ensure compliance challenges are fully remediated.
- Respond to accidents, injuries, illnesses, odor complaints, and hazardous materials spills as needed; investigate mold and asbestos incidences with subject matter experts and facilities operations for remediation; prepare accident reports and communicate with affected employees and managers; perform risk assessments and report results.
- Provide guidance and safety training to facilities staff and students to ensure understanding of compliance expectations; training methods include webinars, classroom sessions, direct interactions, and web-based assignments.
- Ensure safe evacuation of personnel in assigned buildings.
- Ensure timely delivery of work assignments; prioritize and verify project completions; promote process improvements; model the use of PPE and safety awareness; demonstrate strong behavioral competencies.

Desired Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of fire and building codes.
- Basic understanding of chemistry and biology; knowledge of biomedical research operations and equipment used in these operations.
- Advanced knowledge of occupational environmental health and safety principles; preferably a master's degree and professional EHS certification.
- Professional experience in an educational setting preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP), or other relevant certification preferred.
- Ability to independently problem-solve a wide range of circumstances in a complex organization.
- Strong diplomacy and interpersonal skills; highly organized and detail-oriented; knowledge of computer systems, applications, and web page management.
Education & Experience (required)
Bachelor's degree in arts/science in a related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or related field, or equivalent combination.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required)
- Demonstrated ability to conduct health and safety surveys, risk/exposure assessments, and complex data analyses; provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
- Effective verbal and written communication with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Ability to stay current with and interpret government requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, permits) and university policies.
- Working knowledge of scientific and technical regulatory requirements and their impact on the assigned work area.
- Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise.
Certifications & Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone and write by hand.
- Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, fine manipulation, heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds or more).
- Ability to drive day or night.

Working Conditions
- Must wear personal protective equipment as required by job assignments.

The expected pay range for this position is $142,388 to $167,222 per annum.
