Position Summary

The EHS Manager at Jupiter Aluminum is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all safety, health, and environmental programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as corporate standards. This role supports operational leadership in fostering a safety-first culture while maintaining compliance with OSHA, EPA, IDEM, and ISO 14001 standards. The EHS Manager leads site-wide audits, training, incident investigations, and improvement initiatives to reduce risk and enhance performance in a unionized heavy manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

EHS Leadership & Program Management

  • Lead the development and enforcement of site-wide environmental, health, and safety policies, ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Serve as the site authority for OSHA, EPA, RCRA, SPCC, ISO 14001, and local requirements.
  • Maintain, review, and update the facility’s written safety programs (LOTO, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fall Protection, etc.).
  • Lead safety committees and provide regular EHS performance reports to senior management.

Workforce Training, Onboarding & Accountability

  • Conduct EHS onboarding for new hires, contractors, and temporary staff, including site orientation, emergency evacuation procedures, hazard identification, and PPE use.
  • Partner with HR and Operations to maintain up-to-date training records and schedule mandatory recurring training (e.g., forklift certification, annual HAZCOM refresher).
  • Mentor frontline supervisors on incident prevention, safe work observations, and safety coaching.
  • Assist in the enforcement of safety-related discipline and employee retraining when required.

Incident Management & Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead and document investigations of all injuries, near misses, environmental incidents, and property damage events.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and oversee implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Manage OSHA recordkeeping (300, 301, 300A), all associated incident documentation, and reports.

Environmental Compliance & Waste Management

  • Maintain and renew environmental permits, including air emissions, stormwater, and hazardous waste. Ensure accurate and timely submittal of Tier II, TRI/Form R, and biennial waste reports.
  • Oversee scrap, hazardous waste storage, labeling, disposal, and vendor management.
  • Coordinate emissions testing, SPCC compliance, secondary containment inspections, and stormwater sampling.
  • Conduct regular internal audits and lead site readiness for ISO 14001 certification audits.

PPE & Safety Equipment Procurement

  • Maintain inventory and oversee ordering, distribution, and fit-testing (when applicable) of PPE, including uniforms, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, hard hats, steel-toe footwear, respiratory protection, and fall protection.
  • Manage relationships with PPE vendors, negotiate pricing, and ensure timely delivery.
  • Ensure PPE compliance across departments through audits and collaboration with supervisors.

Emergency Response & Preparedness

  • Serve as site emergency response for incidents: chemical spills, fires, injuries, and severe weather.
  • Maintain emergency communication protocols, MSDS/SDS databases, and evacuation maps.
  • Conduct emergency drills and post-incident reviews to assess response effectiveness.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with Production, Maintenance, HR, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain to embed safety into all plant functions.
  • Act as liaison with OSHA, IDEM, EPA, city fire departments, and external auditors during inspections and correspondence.
  • Support corporate sustainability initiatives through resource tracking and environmental impact.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires regular presence in a heavy industrial setting, including mills, furnaces, coil lines, and waste storage areas.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, dust, fumes, and moving equipment is routine; PPE is required.
  • Work is split between office (approximately 40%) and plant floor (approximately 60%).
  • Must be available for occasional evening, night, or weekend coverage during incidents or audits.
  • Travel may be required for training or corporate meetings.

Qualifications: Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field required.
  • 5–10 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment required; aluminum or metals industry preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, IDEM, and ISO 14001 standards and reporting systems.
  • Experience with incident investigation tools (e.g., 5-Why, Fishbone, TapRooT) and risk assessments (JSA, HIRA).
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or CHMM preferred.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SDS software, and EHS management systems (e.g., VelocityEHS, ISNetworld, Enablon).

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to walk, stand, climb stairs/ladders, and conduct inspections in tight or elevated spaces.
  • Capable of wearing respiratory protection and other PPE as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally during sampling or inspections.
  • Able to respond to emergencies or incidents across the plant within minutes.
