The Senior HSE (Health, Safety, and Environmental) Manager is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the safety, health, and environmental standards within multiple locations in the Company. This role includes developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and practices to protect employees, ensure regulatory compliance, and minimize environmental impact. This role is responsible for the Wanchese Fish Company facility, Suffolk Cold Storage, two of our sale distribution groups located in San Francisco, CA and Miami, FL as well as oversight of our Safety and Health Coordinator in Maine.

Senior HSE Manager - Food Manufacturing

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Conduct risk assessments, hazard analysis, and safety audits to identify potential hazards and mitigate risks.
  • Monitor compliance with local, regional, and national health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, local food safety regulations).
  • Oversee accident investigations and prepare reports on the causes and preventative actions.
  • Lead the safety training programs for employees at all levels to promote safe practices.
  • Manage emergency response planning, including fire drills and first aid procedures.

Environmental Management

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability practices within the manufacturing process.
  • Develop waste management strategies, including recycling, disposal, and energy consumption reduction.
  • Implement and monitor procedures to minimize environmental impact, including air and water quality controls, waste reduction, and sustainable resource use.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies and environmental organizations for compliance and reporting purposes.

Compliance and Audits

  • Develop and lead internal audits, inspections, and assessments related to HSE matters.
  • Maintain records for all HSE activities, inspections, audits, and regulatory compliance.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare and present HSE performance reports to senior management, highlighting key metrics, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Review and update safety protocols, procedures, and compliance documents regularly to ensure they remain current with regulations.

Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and train the HSE team, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their duties.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (production, maintenance, quality control, etc.) to foster a culture of health, safety, and environmental awareness.
  • Provide guidance and advice to senior management regarding risk management, regulatory changes, and safety best practices.
  • Collect and report global safety data quarterly to the Board of Directors

Emergency Preparedness

  • Ensure that emergency response plans (fire, chemical spill, medical emergencies) are regularly tested, updated, and communicated across the organization.
  • Lead crisis management teams in the event of incidents or emergencies.

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance, promoting a proactive approach to hazard prevention.
  • Analyze HSE performance data to identify trends and implement corrective actions or new initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in HSE management within a manufacturing environment, preferably in the food industry.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and health and safety legislation.
  • Leadership: Proven experience in leading teams, managing change, and influencing safety culture across an organization.
  • Skills: Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Proficient in the use of safety management software, MS Office, and relevant data analysis tools.

Working Conditions

  • On-site at the food manufacturing plant, with occasional site visits for audits and inspections.
  • May require work outside of normal business hours, depending on plant operations and emergencies.
