Role Overview
The Safety Coordinator at Heaton Erecting, Inc. assists in implementing and maintaining safety programs that ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and company safety standards. This role supports a strong safety culture by conducting inspections, assisting with training, and promoting continuous improvement in health and safety practices across crane, rigging, and steel erection operations. The Safety Coordinator reports directly to the Corporate Safety Manager and works closely with the Operations team, project managers, and field personnel to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
1. Alignment with Company Vision & Values
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and servant leadership in alignment with company mission, vision, and core values.
- Ensure all safety initiatives and communications reflect professionalism, accuracy, and a commitment to protecting employees, clients, and the public.
- Contribute to company safety goals through proactive risk management and compliance oversight.
2. Safety Program Implementation & Compliance
- Implement and enforce company safety policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular site inspections, hazard assessments, and audits to identify risks and ensure compliance.
- Assist the Corporate Safety Manager in the development of the safety manual and documentation, and manage related deliverables and updates.
- Ensure site-specific requirements such as badging, training, and credentialing are met for all employees.
3. Training & Development
- Assist the Corporate Safety Manager in developing safety training programs and materials for all employees, including operators, riggers, ironworkers, and supervisors.
- Facilitate onboarding safety for new hires.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and refresher trainings to reinforce safe work practices.
4. Incident Management & Reporting
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate safety records, including OSHA logs, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
- Ensure timely reporting of safety incidents to the Corporate Safety Manager and regulatory agencies as required.
- Publish incident reports to senior leadership and distribute lessons learned company-wide.
- Monitor corrective action plans to ensure follow-up and closure.
5. Coordination & Communication
- Collaborate with Operations, Dispatch, and Project Managers to ensure safe planning and execution of crane and rigging activities.
- Communicate safety expectations and requirements clearly to employees, subcontractors, and clients.
- Provide guidance and support to supervisors and field leaders on safety-related matters.
- Ensure project teams conduct pre-job planning and client meetings to integrate safety into project execution, participating directly in key high-risk projects as needed.
6. Continuous Improvement & Risk Mitigation
- Monitor safety performance metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support the Corporate Safety Manager in developing strategic safety initiatives.
- Recommend equipment, process, or policy changes to improve safety performance.
- Foster a culture of reporting and proactive hazard identification.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Weekly: Conduct a minimum of six crane job site safety inspections per week. Lead the Monday morning Toolbox Talk at 7:30 a.m., including review of recent near misses and lessons Collect all near-miss reports and present findings during weekly Toolbox Talks.
- Monthly: Completion and accuracy of safety inspections and audits; Number of toolbox talks and training sessions conducted; Timeliness of incident reporting and corrective action closures.
- Quarterly: Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR); Employee safety training completion rate; Safety observations and hazard reports closed on time.
- Annual: Year-over-year improvement in safety performance metrics; Compliance audit results (internal and external); Implementation of safety improvement initiatives; Employee engagement and participation in safety programs.
Qualifications & Certifications
- OSHA 30 certification
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and industry-specific safety
- Experience in construction, crane, rigging, or steel erection safety management
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to train and mentor
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and safety management
