As an Occupational Hygiene Specialist, you are primarily responsible for assessing operational risk related to occupational health and hygiene and providing leadership that will enable the development and implementation of best practice occupational health and hygiene programs/strategies. Additionally, you will support EPCOR’s vision to be a company where ‘safety matters most’ and demonstrates the commitment to ‘put safety first in everything we do.’

This position reports to the Manager, Health & Safety (H&S) Shared Services in collaboration with Shared Services Specialists - Occupational Injury Specialist, all H&S Advisors and Technical Training to support operations in achieving the workplace health, hygiene, and safety goals.

What you’d be responsible for

  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing the H&S plan within EPCOR’s corporate framework (including mission, vision, values, strategic positioning, operational plan, and resource plan) while ensuring budget requirements are available to attain H&S goals.
  • Acting as a key contributor in developing EPCOR’s Occupational Health & Safety strategic plans and initiatives surrounding lead, asbestos, silica, noise, air quality, chemical, biological and radiological exposures, ergonomics, and health protection/surveillance activities.
  • Building effective relationship and strengthening partnerships with EPCOR’s Water, Electricity, and Commercial Services teams, Human Resources, Legal, unions, regulatory bodies, and other Senior Leaders to facilitate occupational health and hygiene initiatives.
  • Managing the administration of EPCOR’s Health and Safety Management System and communicating occupational health and hygiene plans effectively to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, policies, and procedures by all stakeholders.
  • Recommending the adoption of H&S industry best practices to promote innovation on health surveillance aspects such as Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), chest x-rays, audiograms, biological monitoring, and respiratory fit testing as per corporate protocols that drives a Zero Injury/Illness culture.
  • Defining, monitoring and reporting optimal H&S performance results attained against set metrics or targets as well as resolving identified gaps that may impact continuous improvement or business operations

What’s required to be successful

  • Completion of post-secondary education (certificate/diploma/degree) in health, hygiene, or safety related discipline, as well as management development/business administration with specific education and experience in the occupational health, hygiene, and ergonomic areas.
  • 10+ years of relevant and progressive health and safetyexperience coupled with experience in water and waste water collection and distribution, and electricity services
  • In good standing in designation as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT).
  • Strong knowledge of industry trends and practices on occupational H&S and hygiene, as well as applicable legislation, regulations, codes while ensuring integration with EPCOR’s HS&E.
  • Proficient use of hygiene monitoring equipment (dosimeters, sampling pumps, direct reading instruments, etc.), the interpretation of monitoring results, and consolidation of findings and recommendations in written reports that meet the needs of intended audiences.
  • Experience building strong partnerships with internal partners: Unions, Human Resources, Business Units, etc.
  • Exceptional attention to detail; ability to lead and influence complex work and cross-functional teams
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to express concepts and technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
