Health and Safety Project Officer

About the Role

  • Supports the Senior Manager to develop strategic initiatives from inception to implementation, including project planning, research and development of program materials, communication strategy and timeline, communication to internal clients, and execution.
  • Builds a network of external health and safety professionals, associations, and related organizations to provide insight into best practices.
  • Identifies need for, and may be required to liaise with, internal or external specialists to assist in review.
  • Assists with the evaluation and development of safety practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Responds to requests for safety direction, equipment, and information from LCBO staff.
  • Conducts ongoing review of legislative compliance of health and safety programs, ensuring all necessary documentation is filed and available for review by internal or external parties when required.
  • Gathers, tracks and compiles required statistics for quarterly reports to the Board to support legislative compliance and good governance. Reports include claim statistics, critical injuries across the organization, Ministry of Labour activity, compliance, and other areas of importance.
  • Raises employee and manager awareness of health, safety, and wellness programs to support the goal of becoming an international safety leader through the development of various communications and campaigns.
  • Responds to accidents at head office to give guidance on appropriate process, coordinates emergency, medical or assistance services, and records relevant information.
  • Assists managers with incident investigations and work refusals to identify root causes and to make recommendations to prevent recurrences.
  • Participates in workplace inspections and safety audits, to help identify inadequate safety practices, procedures, or conditions and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Assists the Senior Manager with the development, beautification and delivery of health, safety and wellness presentations and training programs
  • Represents the LCBO during Ministry of Labour visits where required
  • Leads and directs safety committee meetings on a quarterly basis, attended by bargaining unit representatives and management representatives. Coordinates with committee members to review accident information. Conducts a monthly walk-through of the head-office complex to inspect hazards that may be present.
  • Coordinates disability management intake and gathers information to prepare timely WSIB submissions per legislative requirements
  • Updates and manages the content for various Workplace Wellness and Safety platforms (e.g., Intranet, ServiceNow, Violence Risk Assessment an Online Accident Reporting System)
  • Advises, evaluates and ongoing administration of numerous health, safety and wellness procurement contracts
  • Takes on special projects as assigned by the Senior Manager.

About You

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field, preferred
  • A working knowledge and understanding of all relevant health and safety legislation and industry standards relating to occupational health and safety
  • Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification and First Aid Certification
  • Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative information to provide health, safety, and wellness guidance and recommendations
  • Excellent skills related to the use of Microsoft Excel to track and analyze data
  • Excellent presentation creation and beautification skills
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines through strong organizational skills
  • Comfort in collaborating and partnering with numerous stakeholders and team members across the organization
