Savage CANAC Corporation, an established supply chain solutions company, is seeking a Safety, Health, and Environment Manager to provide direct safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) support to Savage’s rail and transloading operations in Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, and Kamloops. This position will office out of Edmonton, Alberta.

  • *What You’ll Be Doing**:
  • Mentor and coach a workforce to be skilled in rail operation and the transloading of various bulk products, including the development and execution of site-specific procedures
  • Lead in Safety by setting an example, following procedures, praising safe behavior, correcting unsafe acts and building a culture of safety
  • Spend up to 40% field time in the operation, observing and working alongside team members as they load/unload, railcars/trailers and perform rail related activities
  • Work with the team members to ensure work activities are performed in a safe and healthy manner in compliance with Savage applicable policies, regulatory obligations and customer requirements
  • Communicate with the local leadership team on any operational problems or issues and provide accurate reporting
  • Establish a trusting relationship between Savage, the customer and regulators in a way that creates value and provides opportunity to elevate our relationship with them and other terminal customers
  • Provide leadership and coaching in execution of the Savage System, including all elements of the S7
  • Thorough understanding of Railway Operations and Rail Safety
  • Assist with updating, maintaining and continuously improve team training binders and our Savage U training platform
  • Assist with current 5S programs; support, delegate and sustain it
  • Maintain standard Rail operating procedures and Safety Management System to ensure terminal is meeting all regulatory requirements
  • Ensure Team Members follow policies and procedures and are aware of site policies and initiatives
  • Facilitate incident investigation, root cause analysis, implementation and closure of corrective actions
  • Work with the Shift Supervisors and leadership team to promote Safety including strengthening and empowering the Safety Specialist Team
  • Willing to be reached and able to assist 24/7/365
  • *What You Need to Be Successful**:
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of Safety, Health, & Environment including inter provincial regulations, TDG, and Rail Safety
  • Proven ability to analyze situations and data to make sound decisions.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite with the ability to navigate Savage's internal reporting system for statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written communication skills for writing reports, trainings, proposals and more
  • A desire to work in the field alongside operators, in an industrial environment
  • Comfortable working in an industrial /refinery environment and the hazards that accompany it; exposure to all weather elements, climbing on top of and underneath railcars/trailers, walking long distances on uneven ground and more
  • Hold a current valid passport for travel purpose
  • *Education / Experience**:
  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field
  • Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or ability to achieve CRSP designation
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience in the rail industry with CROR or IROR certifications
  • Minimum of 2-5 years as a safety professional in a refinery, oil and gas or other industrial environments
  • Extensive knowledge of hazardous materials, transloading, OHS regulations, and safety norms in the rail industry
  • *Physical Requirements**:
  • Ability to go where work is taking place (i.e. uneven surfaces, climb ladders, indoors, outdoors, changing weather conditions)
  • Willing to always wear appropriate PPE when needed and set the example
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. occasionally
