Job Summary
Reporting to the manager of Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness, the Safety Officer will analyze workplace hazards and risks on an ongoing basis and develop, implement, train and evaluate programs to reduce the risk of occupational illness and injury to the workers at Southlake Regional Health Centre (Southlake).
Skills & Abilities
- 3-5 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety in Hospital Acute Care required
- Demonstrated experience in conducting complex investigations and root cause analysis required
- Demonstrated experience in workplace violence prevention program development, risk assessments investigation and evaluation required
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, including. OHSA, WSIA, PHIPA, Human Rights Code of Ontario required
- Demonstrated experience with training development, tracking, evaluation and delivery required '
- Demonstrated service excellence approach and commitment to continuous quality improvement and performance measurement; business acumen, accountability and results orientation
- Expertise supporting organizational change through strategic thinking and organizational behaviour/change management principles
- Strong time management, planning and organizational skills to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication, report-writing and presentation skills; critical thinking, problem-solving and negotiation skills
- Superior professional judgment, diplomacy and relationship building skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety metrics and strong analytical and research skills
- Solid understanding and use of project management and ability to balance and manage multiple interests.
- Demonstrates excellence in communication, both written and verbal
- Innovative and willing to learn
- Commitment to customer service and teamwork
- Demonstrates individual leadership skills
- Proven ability to attend work regularly as per the Attendance Support Policy

- *Qualifications**:
- University degree, diploma or certificate in occupational health & safety
- Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (C.R.S.P) or committed to obtaining within two years of hire.
- Safety Auditor certificate an asset.

Primary Responsibilities
- Acts as safety champion to promote safety throughout the hospital in a proactive manner with staff and management
- Assists management with the proactive development and review of safe work processes
- Facilitates organizational compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety act and its regulations, and implementation of related best practices
- Prepares, delivers and evaluates training sessions including both e-learning and in-person
- Promotes safety through communication in a variety of modes such as scripted messages, staff huddles, Leadership/ Management meetings, Safety Programs, Safety Bulletins
- Maintains knowledge of updates and changes to legislation and best practices in the health and safety field
- Facilitates and supports the operation of Joint Health and Safety Committ
