Job Summary

This role is an on-campus position that leads research and laboratory safety programs within the Office of Risk Management.

The Laboratory Safety Manager provides campus-wide leadership for chemical safety and biosafety by conducting laboratory inspections, corrective-action governance, and training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the University Chemical Hygiene Officer and maintain the Chemical Hygiene Plan in accordance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard.
  • Lead the laboratory inspection program, manage research safety system, and keep safety data complete and current.
  • Serve as the institutional Biological Safety Officer, aligning work with NIH Guidelines and BMBL, and supporting IBC protocol reviews, biosafety training, and autoclave compliance.
  • Manage hazardous and universal waste programs in compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Plan and perform exposure assessments for chemicals, vapors, and noise, and translate results into prioritized control measures.
  • Support Laser Safety and Radiation Safety program leads by maintaining registration and inventories for lasers and radiation-producing devices.
  • Lead investigations of laboratory incidents, exposures, and near misses, and communicate lessons learned with departments and leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience coordinating safety programs in laboratory or research settings within higher education or comparable environments
  • Certifications such as CIH, CSP, or CHMM preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required; experience with database-support software or web design preferred
