Position Overview: The Area Director of Safety and Compliance is responsible for leading and managing safety programs across multiple operating regions, supporting approximately 500 non-CDL fleet units. This role drives a strong safety culture, ensures compliance with all regulatory and company safety standards, and partners closely with operations and fleet teams to minimize risk and improve performance. The Area Safety Director serves as a key leader in promoting proactive safety engagement and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Location: Rockville, MD (On-Site)
Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000 annually
What you’ll do
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads and promotes a “Safety-First” culture.
- Conducts regular safety meetings, site visits, and coaching sessions.
- Ensures compliance with company safety policies, OSHA, and other regulations.
- Oversees driver orientation and ongoing safety training.
Fleet and Operations Partnership
- Partners with fleet and operations teams for vehicle inspections, maintenance, and documentation.
- Leads accident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation.
- Collaborates with risk management and HR on incident tracking and injury prevention.
- Uses data and telematics insights to identify high-risk behaviors and implement improvement plans.
Reporting and Program Management
- Develops and tracks key safety performance indicators (KPIs).
- Provides regular reports and updates to senior leadership on safety performance.
- Supports company-wide safety initiatives, audits, and continuous improvement programs.
- Stays current with industry best practices, technologies, and regulatory changes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Manage a team of local Safety Ambassadors and Safety Coordinators.
- Provides leadership, direction, and professional development for direct reports.
- Oversees safety performance across 4–8 areas or 500-800 vehicles per area.

Requirements
What you’ll bring
- Minimum 5-8 years of safety leadership experience within fleet, transportation or logistics operations.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA, DOT (where applicable) and general fleet safety standards.
- Proven experience leading teams and influencing cross-functional partners.
- Proficiency with safety management systems, telematics, and reporting tools.
- Ability to analyze complex data and translate it into actionable insights.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel within the Midwest region a minimum of two to three weeks per month depending on business needs.
