JOB SUMMARY

As the Construction Safety Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) for the Toro Aluminum Group of Companies and our sub-contracted installation crews.

REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The incumbent must have a reliable vehicle and must have a full Class G license.
  • The work environment is mostly outdoors on construction sites in various states of completion during all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking up and down stairs, climbing ladders and navigating uneven terrain.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

Health and Safety

  • Drive and support the implementation of Toro’s OHSM program and continuous improvement in order to achieve safety excellence. This will include but not limited to all environmental aspects management, safety risk management, contractor safety, culture, etc.

Technical/Function

  • Conduct site visits with sub-contractors and site staff and complete site safety reports. Inspect all aspects of safety as it relates to the installation process on site for existing and potential hazards and recommend corrective actions and preventative measures.
  • Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, recommend and implement corrective actions and preventative measures. Complete investigation reports.
  • Follow-up with site concerns and third-party inspection reports relating to sub-contractor safe work and administrative procedures.
  • Draft site-specific Safe Work Procedures for review.
  • Ensure that management is informed about significant safety issues.
  • Monitor and manage sub-contractor safety documentation. Distribute to clients on site as requested.
  • Source, research, develop and recommend updates to site safety documentation.
  • Conduct site-specific safety training initiatives with full-time employees and sub-contractors.
  • Ensure that sub-contractors and full-time employees are in compliance with all site safety regulations and client safety requirements.
  • Monitor and manage sub-contractors safety documentation including but not limited to WSIB Clearence certificates, training records, safe work procedures, etc.
  • Update and maintain safety data spreadsheets and reports for management.
  • Make recommendations on the purchasing of equipment and products for use on site where applicable.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the Toro Group.
  • Participate and support Toro Aluminum employees and sub-contractors in site safety meetings.

Internal/External Customer Service

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with Toro internal departments, external vendors, regulatory agencies, and Toro Aluminum stakeholders.
  • Being proactive in identifying issues and helping to address these to best serve the needs of customers.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-Secondary Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Worker Awareness, WHMIS, Working at Heights

EXPERIENCE

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in the Health and Safety profession.
  • Technical knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and O.Reg.213/91 Construction Projects.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in the construction industry.

  • Strong computer skills including MS Office (specifically Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Office 365).
  • Demonstrate leadership, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Energetic, self-motivated promotor of health and safety in a positive, practical manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with all levels across the organization.
